Essay on American Culture and Patriotism after World War Two
As a result of the war, America felt a new patriotism. As the wealth of the country increased the people were inclined to celebrate their success. They also celebrated having a much easier life than in comparison to the hardship and compromises of the war years. This was evident in the products that were designed to save Americans time and effort. There was advertising particularly aimed at women in the home household products. The consumerist beliefs were perpetuated by the mass media, radio, television, cinema and print media. Household objects and celebrities faces were the way to sell these products. Art became visible to greater sections of the population and to lower classes. They no longer was content to be imaged of the generation ahead of them, young people wanted change. The changes affected education, values, lifestyles, laws and entertainment. After the Second World War minorities returned home to find a country that still did not grant them full rights. Some African American soldiers who had left farm jobs in the South decided not to return home after the war. Instead they moved to cities looking for work that was similar to what they had learned in the armed forces. However many companies would not hire minorities for professional jobs, but would hire them to clean up. With no other choice some minorities took the jobs cleaning in hopes to move in to professional positions. To assist minorities with equality, a movement for the growth of civil rights had been born. This marked the new period in the history of the United States. The war made human life and freedom a really important concept. It was so important that the extent of human rights became the primary concern of the world community. African Americans had gained the basic civil rights. This was unprecedented to the extent that they had not gotten an opportunity to really feel equal to other members of society.
